Well..lets see. I don't want to get your hopes too high but I would like to work backwards here and follow Rose back in time. If it is the same person as in the 1920 census living with her mom Anna (a widow) and her sisters and younger brother Charles then we need to find them in the 1930 Census and so far I am having no luck. Perhaps they passed away..

Now, if we go back to the 1910 Census, Rose came from a very large family. Her father would have been William a farmer who was deceased by 1920. I was able to track down who I think is one of the sisters would is married and still living in New Jersey in 1930..

My guess is Rose was alone..her mom and brother passed on and her older siblings married and on their own. Maybe we should look into sending away for Rose's birth certificate to confirm her parents names and see if this was in fact the family. I will have to go through everything carefully though before I commit. Meanwhile, I am having, as always, trouble posting links so I hope Biff or someone pops in and gives a helping hand..would also love other peoples opinions here.

anybodys input would greatly be appreciated. But sounds good with Roses parents. This is what bette from the NJ archives sent me when i asked her if she knew anything on Rose Gilchrist, this is what she said

Dear Steven Springer:

1) If you subscribe to www.ancestry.com you can search the 1910, 1920, and 1930 US census on line.

The 1930 census lists four possibilities.

1930 – NJ- Essex County – Newark – House of the Good Shepherd – 6th Ward - ED 7-86

Rose Gilchrist - [inmate] – age 17 – single – born: New Jersey

1930 – NJ – Bergen County – North Arlington Borough – ED 2-170

William Gilchrist age 40

ROSE age 38 [wife]

Illean age 15

William age 15

ROSE age 13 [daughter] born: New Jersey

James age 10

Catherine age 8

Joseph age 5

Charles age 2

Marie age 11 months

Francis Healey? age 18 [step-son]

1930 – NJ – Hudson County – Jersey City – Ninth Ward – ED 9-123

Thomas Gilchrist age 42

ROSE V. age 38 [wife]

Margaret age 18

Thomas age 9

Raymond age 5

Alfred age 1 yr.

1930 – NJ – Mercer County – Lawrence Township

Jessie Gilchrist age 23

ROSA A. age 21 [ wife]

Jonathan age 1

1920 – NJ – Hudson County – Hoboken – Ward 4 – ED 86

Anna Gilchrist age 34 born: New York

Grace “ age 14 born: New York

Eleanor “ age 10 born: New York

ROSA “ age 8 born: New Jersey [daughter]

Charles age 4

2) You could be searching for the Rose/Rosa Gilchrist that was born ca. 1912/1913. She was listed in Hoboken in 1920 and may be the same Rose Gilchrist in Newark, House of the Good Shepherd in 1930. Harrison in Hudson County is just across the River from Newark.

3) You may want to apply for the birth record of a female child of Rose Gilchrist, born on your mother’s birth date. The Birth Record should provide Rose Gilchrist’s age. Do not mention that this person was later adopted, even though the birth record should not be sealed since it was prior to 1940.

4) With a name like Gilchrist the family may have been Catholic. You may want to search Catholic Church Records for a baptismal record for the female child of Rose Gilchrist. I cannot say if the Newark Archdiocese has any records from Catholic Adoption agencies. Nor can we say if they would make any of the information accessible to you.

My birthmother spent her entire pregnancy in a home called "The House of Good Shepherd" Typically I think it is a home for unwed pregnant mothers.

I could be wrong...

My biological father's mother had 3 children out of wedlock with 3 different fathers (terribly sad) over a span of 15 years.

Sad

Steven,

I been doing some searches (not yet complete) and the Rose's family (the 17 years old) was originally from New York. I will try this week to follow the two Rose's (both the 8 year old and 17 year old) and see if we can come up with anything about where the families went. I would also take Bette's advice and write away for the documents as she suggested.

Also, the 17 year old Rose had a younger brother Charles who seems to have disappeared by 1930. Perhaps he died as a child or moved away..either way, there is a good chance he would be the only one that didn't have a name change so it may be worth a try to find out what happened to him.

Lots to do...get writing away for those records..

Another possibility on Rose's mother Anna from www.findagrave.com ?

www.findagrave.com/cgi...d=2512605&

Birth: Apr. 13, 1886
Death: Aug. 5, 1957

Burial:
Beverly National Cemetery
Beverly
Burlington County
New Jersey, USA
Plot: L, 3062

Record added: Mar 3 2000

Can you contact the cemetery to see what info they have on this person?

I'm also not convince that it wouldn't be this Rose who would be about 21 when your grandmother was born..

Steven,
I think I may be related to you! I am the daughter of Joseph Gilchrist. I think that the person whom you are looking for is my aunt Rose from Harrison NJ. The census data from 1930 is my father's family!
Regards, Sue
