My grandmother always said that her father came to America three times but I have been able to find only two arrivals at Ellis Island.

Poking around the Steve Morse/Ancestry website I came across a Nicolo Salinitri (my ggrandfather was Nicola Salinitri). This man crossed the border from Canada to Nyando, NY, USA. A little googling, and I discovered that the town's name was changed to Rooseveltown which is right across the border from Cornwall, Ontario, Canada. I presume he probably landed in Montreal and made his way to Cornwall by train.

Can someone who has Ancestry find out the rest of the details for me, please? I would appreciate it greatly.

My grandmother also said that he was turned away three times from entering the US. If this is my ggrandfather, this might have been his way to circumvent being turned away.

Thanks for your help.
Mary

Wow, Nuccia, thank you so much.

The second one is definetely him. That's my ggrandmother Filomena he left behind in Ardore. I have his birth date as 1856 or 1858 from one arrival at Ellis Island and the birth act of a son, so 1855 fits.

The second one has "rejected" to the left of his name. Does that mean that he was turned back at the port of Montreal and had to go back to Italy -- does anyone know what happened in these cases. It also says that his last residence was Can., Sydney -- I presume Nova Scotia -- very curious, what was he doing in Sydney??? Just thinking out loud.

I am not sure about the first manifest. The dates are off. But then again it could be a mistake or he lied. He is headed to Windber, Pa. That's where is son had imigrated to 3 years earlier.

This is a new mystery to unravel.

My grandmother always said that he never went away again after she was born in 1909. I guess she was wrong.

Thanks again, Nuccia.

I am still putting the garden and flower beds to bed for the winter. In a week or two I will start the Ardore transcriptions again.

Hi Mary!

Hope you're doing well! I have been busy uploading new images to the Ardore site for the last few days. All the one I copied in the Spring are sitting here waiting so now is the time. When you're ready they should be there waiting for you!

And thanks again for all your help!

Nuccia, it looks like you added 1818, 1819,1820, and 1821 -- am I correct? Do you have a preference as to which year I should start with?

Also, this new ggrandfather mystery has led me to ancestry.co.uk which has him landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. If it's him, he's listed as "Nicola Saliniter".

Would someone with that subscription please post the rest of the information for me. I would be very grateful.

Mary

Thanks again, Nuccia.

The more I search the more the mystery deepens. This man certainly got around.

I'll email you when I'm ready to start transcribing again.

Mary
