Bridget, I may be asking the obvious here, but have you tried to get a marriage record for him. His parents' names might be on there.

Hi Mary,

That is an excellent point. I have been on an exhaustive hunt for these records. I cannot find church records for any of the local Catholic churches. I even thought perhaps there were married in PA and sent for records there. But, they did an exhaustive search and could not find the records. So the short answer is that I have not been able to find a record of their marriage. But, I do have a wedding photo. So I know they were married.

I can safely say that none of this is going to be easy or straightforward. But, I so appreciate your help!

Bridget, Is there any writing on their wedding picture? It might help in locating where they were married. Is it possible they were married in Hamilton?

What were the names of his wife's parents. Maybe they're in the 1911 census for Hamilton. I searched with Mary Ellen who would have been about 12 at the time but nothing came up.

Mary,

There is no writing on the wedding photos. Hamilton is a possibility. But, they married in 1916 or 17. Mary Ellen's parents were Edward John Kearney and Margaret McGuigan. They married in Hamiliton. I have they're marriage record.

Hi Bridget. These are some some marriage records for Ardore containing Castelvetere individuals: They might come in handy in the future. Until you find Bruno's marriage record to establish the names of his parents, I guess it's impossible to do any research in the old country.

1884 Marriage – Domenico Antonio Castelvetere & Antonia Santo…..o? #49

1884 Marriage – Domenico Clemente & Elisabetta Castelvetere #48

1894 Marriage – Domenico Castelvetere & Maria Morabito #2
1894 Marriage – Vincenzo Taliano & Maria Rosa Castelvetere #34?
1894 Marriage – Luigi Pasquale Todarello & Maria Antonia
Castelvetere #53?

1903 Marriage – Vincenzo GioBattista Schirripa & Giuditta
Castelvetere #1

Mary,

Thank you so much for the information. I think you have found some possible cousins. My plan is to go to a family history center and see if they have any suggestions regarding locating marriage records for Bruno & MaryEllen. Hopefully, they have a resource.

Thank you so much for your help. I really do appreciate it. I hope you have wonderful holidays!

Bridget

Bridget. I just realized that I forgot to tell you the reason why fathers registered their children later after they were born.

In Italy, it was mandatory, until recently, that all male children go into the military the year they turned 20 (I think). So that parents could keep their sons at home one extra year, especially if they were born late in the year, they would go and register them in the new year. Once the government officials became wise to this practice (I presume there must have been a disproportionate number of boys supposedly born in January) a law was passed that children had to be registered as soon as they were born. Parents got around this law by still registering their children later but saying they were born that day or the night before.

Please keep us posted if you make any progress with your research.

All the best for the holidays.
Mary

Hi Mary - Is it possible to get a copy of that birth act for 1893 for Giuseppe son of Bruno after all? We found some info (I'll let Bridget tell you since I'm late picking up my husband) and that just may be the one we need. Also, Bridget besides the Philadelphia manifest I found this one - looks like he traveled back to Italy that same year: Call me later.

Perhaps we have his 1910 Census?

1910 United States Federal Census about Bruno Castalvart
Name: Bruno Castalvart
Age in 1910: 19
Birth Year: abt 1891
Birthplace: Italy
Home in 1910: Pine, Mercer, Pennsylvania
Race: White
Gender: Male
Immigration Year: 1908
Relation to Head of House: Boarder
Marital Status: Single
Father's Birthplace: Italy
Mother's Birthplace: Italy
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members:
Name Age
Nick Yankos 25
Dorenco Yankos 23
Mike Bodih 20
Vara Sofranin 49
Steve Bodih 30
Whaski Trivo 23
Philip Prato 26
Bruno Castalvart 19

As I suspected he went to work in the mines - the guy above him, Prato, Philip - That is a surname from Ardore (and one of the surnames I am researching). Will link images soon - want to look for a 1920 Census first.

So exciting!!

Ok, today I was able to get his naturalization papers. No parents names. But, the state department notes are included. They lis my Bruno as Giuseppe Costlevetere. Arrived on Ancona feb. 3, 1909. Daughter Jennie was born in McKeess rock, pa in 1917.

So, Mary, I think you were right on your initial info from 1893. He does list dob as August 10, 1893.

Nuccia,

I cannot wait to talk! That census makes sense. Mercer county is also where his draft card registration address is from. (orchard st.).
Thanks so much. I think we are getting closer

Weird the coming and going so close to each other.

Nuccia, All I have for 1893 is the index that I posted earlier. I ordered it this past spring and it's gone back to Utah.

I'm also researching Prato'. My GG grandmother was Maria Prato' married to Saverio Nobile. I have the names of 7 children born to them. I don't have a lot of info on them, but if I can be of help let me know.

Mary

Thanks on both counts Mary. I will touch base with you at some point during the holidays or in the New Year.

Ok so it looks like we write away to Ardore.
