So, my husbands grandmother always said she was from Calabria. She never mentioned a city and no one in the family thought of asking. We are planning a trip to Southern Italy and my husband would love to visit the city/village she was from. I have her birth name, date of birth and her parents name and that is all
My husband was raised by his grandparents and it would mean a lot to him if he could visit the city she was from. if anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Welcome to Gente!

What was her name, maiden name, birthdate and parents' names?
Did she have any siblings you know of? Names?
Whom did she marry? Where/when did she marry?
Where did she live in the states (assuming she emigrated to the US)?
Plus, any other details/information you can supply which she may have related to your husand.

Biff

Biff83 thank you.
her name was Concetta Tarantino 12/08/1903
her fathers name was Pelegrino Tarantino
moms name was Marianna Ferrero
her sisters name was zizzi (sp) and possibly a sister named Bertha.
she lived in the Boston area.

She married Anthony Valenti I believe in Boston ma.
his fathers name was Francesco valenti
moms name was Maria Castagnino
he was from someplace in avellino. his birthdate was 2/14/1901. My husband does not know where but, would love to. His father died when he was very young. possibly in Italy. his mother remarried
he had a brother named salvatore
and several sisters. his sisters were all born in boston my husband thinks.
If you can find any information we would be so grateful. thank you

I believe this is the 1 Sep 1918 marriage Record for Anthony Valenti and Concetta Tarantino. Number 5156

familysearch.org/ark:/...1:KB8S-8H4

Ages on this possible 1940 census record indicates Antonio was born about 1889; Concetta about 1897? Lines 43-44
Do you know if they stayed and lived in Boston?

familysearch.org/ark:/...1:K4JX-P7M

1962 Naturalization Index Card

I'm trying to locate any information which might indicate where they were from in Italy but thus far haven't been successful.

If the birthdates you gave for them are correct and they married in 1918, that means that Antonio was 17 and Concetta 15.

I also found this 1917 death record for a Raffaele Tarrantino, father Pellegrino and mother Anna Ferreira, who I believe is Concetta's brother.

familysearch.org/ark:/...1:23RV-C2L

And this 1912 marriage for a Maria L Tarantino, parents Pellegrino and Anna M Ferriera, who I believe is Concetta's sister. Her husband was Antonio Rizzo.

familysearch.org/ark:/...1:N46Q-SDQ

I'm hoping these might lead to other records.

1909 Boston 2 page manifest for Anna Ferriero and daughters Carmela and Concetta. Concetta age 6, birth 1903. Lines 21-23
Last residence and place of birth Melito, Avellino
Destination Boston MA to join husband/father Pellegrino Tarantino.
Although their names are lined out which usually indicates they did not sail and they are not from Calabria, I believe this is your husband's family.

1940 census for Valenti's at 45 Ravine Rd, Medford MA
Anthony, Constance and children Anna, Alfred, Anthony Jr. and Marlene (Marlene listed on following page). Note the ages for Anthony and Constance would make their years of birth around 1895/1896 and the stated place of birth as Massachusetts.

Biff 83,
You are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!
all the information you found is accurate;
My husbands grandmother had a brother who was stabbed and killed.
His grandparents were married at a very young age.
Maria must be Zizzi which must be a nickname his grandmother had for her sister.
Rizzo is part of his family as there were many Rizzos at our wedding 31 years ago today.
My husband thought his grandfather was from avelino and his grandmother from Calabria. It appears everyone in the family had it backwards.
so, his grandmother is from Melito Irpino -- province Avellino -- region Campania. And his grandfather is from Calabria. where is still a mystery. If you have time and can solve this mystery that would be awesome. I can not thank you enough. You gave me the best anniversary gift I could give my husband. Thank you, Thank you Thank you..........

They had a son Frankie he must have been in the service at the time this census was done. Their birth dates I got off of their death certificates. So I assumed the dates were correct.

Happy Anniversary/Felice Anniversario!

I believe that the birth years you have for Antonio and Concetta are the correct ones--1901 and 1903. They may have given their ages on the census as older so no one would know how young they were when they married.

As for Antonio's birthplace, I'm still looking to see if I can find any type of record which might show his birthplace.

1920 census for Antonio, Concetta and son Frank, lines 25-27. Antonio working at the time as a shoemaker. Ages on this census verify they married when young.

interactive.ancestry.c...bel=Return

Anna Valenti birth record?

familysearch.org/ark:/...1:23R8-JX3

Antonio Valenti Naturalization Index card

Neat that both Concetta's card above and Antonio's has a sample of their signatures.

My husband spoke to his 93/94 year old uncle fred. He was telling him all the information you found. He thinks Maria was who they called Bertha. Because he remembers an aunt bertha married a rizzo. My husband believes there is an anthony rizzo about mid 60's who would be a grandson to maria living in nh. he thinks his cousin has a phone number for him.. maybe he knows where his grandmother was from. His uncle also thinks carmela was zizzi. she married but had no children. i'm going to try and get the name of her husband because that might help as well. again thanks.
