I will be preparing for my vacation this weekend and I have a question that I don't know where to find an answer. So I will ask it here. I am bringing my laptop with me. But I have a stack of CD's with document scans from the LDS microfilms that I would like to pack in my suitcase so I don't have to cart them around. Can the CD's lose their data if they put it through a xray machine? It took many months to obtain the data on them and I would hate to lose it.

Thats a good question, Cathy. I don't think that will happen but I'm hoping for a answer from someone who has already gone through this.

Cathy when I went to France last year I took CD's with me (bought ones though with songs on them) they were scanned and they were ok. Dont know if there would be any difference on CD's that had been recorded by yourself. - Question

My son is a really frequent flyer and for work reasons he has to carry his laptop and cd's with him, as do his dj's. You can imagine how many cd's they have to carry for their shows. They obviously have to have everything scanned in the x-ray machines for security reasons, and none have ever mentioned that it causes problems. Most of his dj's fly all over the world, and literally every day! But if you are still worried why not give the airport authority a call.

I undertsand that scanning, some years ago, used to cause a problem (fogging) on photo cd's, but not to music or info ones. In any event, If you are really worried why not make a back-up set to leave safely at home.

CDs are fine. The information is stored optically, not magnetically.

Also, almost all airports are using density scanning rather than mangetic scanning ... this is why it is OK to scan your computer.

Have fun on the trip!
