Tena,

You'll need to write your request for the records in Italian and be as specific as possible about the birth dates or years of Maria Angela and Francesco. You should also include a sef-addressed reply envelope. I prefer to use a 9 x 12 outer envelope with a 6 x 9 reply so the return documents are folded a minimum.

Address to send your request:

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Gizzeria
Via Albania
88040 GIZZERIA (CZ)
ITALY

Give me a little time and I'll try to draft something based on an online form letter. Once I have it done, I'll post it here and we'll see if one of our Italian members will proof and/or enhance it. Information I have is that Francesco was born about 1877 and Maria Angela about 1875. Is that correct?

Do you have the Iowa census records for your grandparents and Francesco's WWI draft card, and his brother John's records. Their parents' names and birth place might be on their death certificates.

Biff

You should write in Italian. Check the form letters in Italian available at:

www.circolocalabrese.o...s/letters/ and www.angelfire.com/ok3/...tters.html

Oh thank you so very much. I do not have any death records but I do have date of births for my grandmother, grandfather and Mariantonia.

M Angela Colella; Born May 20th, 1876
Francesco Saverio Provenzano; Born March 5, 1877
Mariantonia Provenzano; born September 4th, 1899

Hope they did get married in Gizzeria...would be nice to have a real name for Great Grandfather Provenzano. My feeling is that his name was Giovanni Battista Provenzano.

Thank you again and really, really do appreciate your help.

Biff...I do have Grandpa Frank's WWI draft registration, but he did not put down his parents name nor where he was born...just Italy. I could not find any draft registry on John White. I also have all the census from Iowa and Frank said James Provenzano as father and John his 1/2 brother said James White...lol...so confusing. So my hope is that I get some information from Italy. Thank you again for your assistance on my family research!!

Livio,

I would appreciate if you could check the following proposed request. My Italian's not the best and I'd like to make sure Tena's request is understood.
Thanks, Biff

Sample Letter:

Your Name
Street Address
Your City, State/Province Post Code
Your Country
Your E-Mail Address (optional)

Date of Letter For example
17 marzo 2012

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Gizzeria
Via Campania
88040 GIZZERIA CZ
ITALY

Egregi Signori,

Mi chiamo Your Name, ed abito negli Stati Uniti all'indirizzo sopradetto.

Distinti saluti,
Your Name

Thank you Biff...will wait for Italian clarification from others. Is it okay to ask and include the daughter's birth record too?

Tena,

When I've written for records from Italy, I've kept my requests to a maximum of three related records. After I've received them, I've always sent a thank you letter and a small gift to the person who sent the response. Then I've waited about six weeks and sent another letter mentioning how helpful they were in the past and asking for help on more records.

Having said that, I'd like to hear other members' opinions since the other record you're looking for shouldn't be hard to locate. In any event, when you receive the records, send at least a thank you note. We'll give you a hand with the Italian when the time comes.

If the concensus is to ask for Mariantonia's birth act, I'll redo the letter to include same.

Biff

Hi Livio, would greatly appreciate your input on the request letter and is it too much to ask for Mariantonia birth record at the same time?

Much Thanks!

Thank you, Thank you Livio! One more question, is it too much to ask for the daughter's birth record at the same time? Mariantonia Provenzano, born September 8th, 1899.
