Hi all I am trying to track my grandfathers family his name was Domenico Antonio Panaia however we were told that his name was Panajia but the J was removed somewhere along the lines entering australia. His brother Francesco Panajia still held the J. the father's name was Vincenzo and mother Rosa my grandfather was born on the 11 December 1905 in Coulonia Reggio. If anyone can help with anything please let us know we will be going to Italy in this year and would like to meet some family whilst there.
thank you

Hello Very Happy

This link should answer your question about the letter J.
www.omniglot.com/writi...talian.htm

Here are a few Panaia in Caulonia.

And a few more living in the frazione, Marina di Caulonia,

Have a good trip,
Paul

yes this is my great grandfather Vincenzo I am not sure if he was ever in the USA though. my grandfather told my father that there was church fire in Caulonia years ago and it burnt all the birth records and he could not get a copy of his birth certificate.

I would think that the Reggio Calabria Archives should still have a copy of his birth act - even if the comune doesn't. Everything was done in twos - the archives received a copy and the town hall received a copy. I think you need to try that option

If he was born in Caulonia on 1905, at Reggio Calabria state archive you will find his military draft card and/or military record.
First set of Caulonia civil records are kept at Caulonia civil record office, from 1809 to nowadays, second set of Caulonia civil records are kept to Reggio Calabria state archive, from 1809 to 1865.
Military record and military draft cards will show you if the J was dropped or not
I hope it helps bye Riccardo

I think that the civil state of Caulonia is not in Reggio but in the Archivio di Stato di Locri.

PrimoMattino, I have checked all the civil records of the several municipality of Reggio Calabria are saved at Reggio Calabria state archive,
and they go from 1809 to 1900. In any case, the manager of Locri and Reggio Calabria States Archives is the same, so the email or request
can be sent to Reggio Calabria State Archive, I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

I checked today: The Civil State of Caulonia from 1809 till 1865 is in Reggio, from 1865 till 1922 it is in Locri.

Ok so Locri is a bit slow to get a reply from but you can still try. I have received records from there before. I had a friend just extract records from that year - I'm going to contact him now and see if he still has them. Maybe he can get the act for you if he does.
