Hi Pat and welcome to the forum.

I have a few questions for you

1. Was he born in the town named Naples in the province of Naples Region of Campania or was he born in another town in the Province of Naples?
2. Have you obtained a copy of his marriage certificate?
3. Have you obtained a copy of his death certificate?

Let us know the answers and we'll see what we can do. And again, welcome to Gente!!

Elizabeth

I also see Naples Italy, but Naples is crossed off. My guess is that he sailed out of Naples (as many did) but he wasn't from there. Again, it's just a guess.

Matthew registered his name as Costello on his marriage info..perhaps he changed his name later to "fit" in better.

Looks like they registered the birth of their first child Ann as Costello as well in 1864. I noticed son Mathew got married in 1893 As Castelian or Castelian though so somewhere along the way, they definitely changed the surname.

hi nuccia
and thanks for taking the time and trouble to help me. yes i did already have this info but thanks for posting it on here as i did not keep it so i was pleased to read it again, you say it looks like the name was originally costella, and you think they may have changed it at some point? i cant say for certain the name was castellian, i remember my mum telling me some years ago the name was castellan (sounds like) or castella so when i fist started my research i was contacted my a distant cousin of mine who was christinas gggrandson i have also had contact from annes gggrandchildren who all say for certain the name was definatly castellian, although on each of the census the name is spelt different including coothalla costhall castellian and castellain, do you think maybe the name was originally castellian and that it was perhaps the enumerators spelling it wrong mainly due to the accent? my cousin said he has christinas marriage cert and on it her name is spelt castellian, and that one of the witneses surnames was spelt castellain!!!
i have orderd a copy of matthew and marys marriage cert and it should be here by tue next week as they told me it takes 2 weeks to get it.
if the name on the cert is put down as costella how will i ever know for certain what his real surname is?
pat.

Hi Pat,

There is no real way of knowing what the last name was but Castellano was a surname common in Naples. I am wondering if his name was Matteo Castellano. On his marriage certificate he listed his name as Costello...at least thats the name he registered the marriage with, and the name he gave his first born but changed the spelling later.

So.. Costello, Castello, and Castellano are all probabilities.

Hi Pat,

Don't give up yet. Wait until the marriage certificate for Matthew and Mary arrives. Maybe with a little luck it will list his fathers name and mothers full name (maiden). That might give us another avenue to follow which could lead to Matthews place of birth. Let us know when you receive it and maybe we'll get some clues from it.

I also wouldn't give up but I would consider ordering microfilm from Naples for the time period in which you like Matthew may have been born (I think it's available) and see if you see anyone that may match the above names/spellings. Maybe someone can help with the film numbers?
