Nice find Biff and great to see you back! I found Giuseppe's ship manifest and another brother, Luigi's. Unfortunately none list the name of the mother.

Thank you so much, Biff. I have spent hours looking for her, and finally, you found her. Everything fits perfectly, so I am sure that is the correct one.

Can you tell if the last name is written Italiano or Taliano? I think it looks like it is a capital "I" with a small "t" which is not crossed very neatly. On her SS form, they listed her last name as Italiano.

Becky,

I believe the last name is Taliano. If you check the handwriting on the manifest for Taliano and Teresa, to my eyes both begin with the letter "T". The Social Security record is likely incorrect.

True, it must be Taliano. By the way, can Sante be considered a first name for a man?

Although uncommon, Sante is a male first name.

Then Sante probably is the first name of one of the fathers. Thank you for that info.
I still have one who I cannot find any records of immigration. In the 1920 census, she was listed as Leyniaa (sp?) Persi, with her brother, Miller Testa, living with them. Her birth year in that census would have been 1887. I assume her maiden name was Testa. In the 1930 census, she was listed as Cleo Persi, born 1890. I believe her hometown was Patrica, Italy.
I have pored over ship records, but can not find her in them. Her year of immigration was given as 1913 in both censuses.
Is there some easier way of finding her on an index for immigration than what I have been doing? I am thinking her first name was "butchered" in the census reports, and that is hindering my success.

1913 ship manifest for Clarice (that's what first name looks like to me) Testa and daughter Serafina Persi. Lines 27 and 28.
Clarice, age 26, yob about 1887
Serafina, age 4, yob about 1909
Last residence and place of birth: Patrica
Joining husband/father Domenico Persi in ? Pennsylvania
Posssible relative on line 26, Giuseppe Testa.
Looks like both Clarice and Serafina were quarantined for several weeks after their arrival and released from quarantine on 5 Dec 1913 based on notes on second page of manifest.

Just a thought but Clarice's brother "Miller" Testa might have Emilio.

Domencio Persi Petition for Naturalization. Interesting to note it lists his wife's name as what appears to be Levenice. Also gives birthdates and birthplaces for her and children.

Well, Biff, thank you again. That is almost certainly my Leyniaa, Cleo, Levinice (or whatever name she chose to use.) She had a daughter, Sara, who was born in Patrica, @1909. Levinice, aka Cleo, and her husband, Dominic Persi, lived in Hempfield, Westmoreland Co., PA in 1920. The towns listed by her and the other Testa on the ship's manifest, Guiseppe, were Irwin and Herminie. Both of those were close to Hempfield in the same county. By 1930, the Persi family had moved to Aliquippa, Beaver Co, changing from a coal mining job to the steel mill.

I am trying to find info now on the Guiseppe Testa, who was on the ship with her, and who moved to the same general area (about two miles apart.) The Miller Testa listed in the 1920 census was born in 1897 or so and said he immigrated in 1912. Obviously, Miller was not his real first name. I tried looking for Emilio, as you had a thought that might have been his first name, but so far, nothing. The Guiseppe, who was listed with her, I still have not found in records. He might have been an uncle, or possibly her father, since he was 19 years older than her.

Is there some way I can thank you for your help? You (and Nuccia) have both been so helpful. I thought I was fairly adept at finding records, but I have never dealt with recent immigration until now. It makes me wish I had at least one ancestor who had come through Ellis Island!

I have some Greeks who seem to nearly impossible. It appears that most of them changed their names since most were pretty difficult for Americans to pronounce.
I have sent away for several documents, six from Soc. Security. I received one two days ago, but still haven't received the other five, even though I sent them at the same time online.

I am having trouble reading Emilio Testa's ship manifest records. I see the first page which lists his name, etc. (Line 10.) When I went to another page, it showed his detainment. The apparent second page of the manifest shows no person's name for line 10 of whom he left behind in Patrica.

It makes sense that Emilio would have been written as "Miller" on the census, so I'm thinking he might just be Levinice's brother.

Becky,

I believe the following is Teresa Taliano's 1916 ship manifest. Line 19

Ma(ria) Teresa Taliano (misindexed as Tabiano)
Approx year of birth 1883
Marital status, single
Last residence and place of birth Portigliola
Nearest relattve in Italy father Domenico
Destination Beaver Falls PA to join brother Giuseppe

Biff

Biff,
Is there some way I can print the manifest out from the file you gave me? I cannot find it through Ancestry, and when I try to print it from the Ellis Island web site, it will only print in huge print the left top corner of it.
The ship was America, arriving on April 19, 1916.

I haven't found a good way to do this yet - except if you want to print it in sections then you could print screen and copy to paint.

Here's how it is indexed through Ancestry....

Becky,

I've corrected the link to the second page of Emilio Testa's manifest.

Also, see if these links to Teresa Taliano's manifest pages work. You should be able to save them by right clicking and then print.
