I'm looking for some information regarding my ancestors the Trollos and Scarpettis.
Carmine Trollo was born May 1861 in Nocera Superiore. He was the son of Giovanna Palumbo (Mar 1835 - ?) and Antonio Trollo
He married Rosa Scarppetti in 1880.
She was born June 26 1859 to Maria Faiella and Raffaele Scarpetti.
The couple had 9 children.
The first 3 were born in Italy: Giovanna (1884), Antonio(1887), Maria(1890)
The rest were born in the US: Carmela(1893), Margaret(1897),Emma(1898), Raffaele(1900), Francesco(1901), Matteo(1903)
I was wondering if anyone can help with any further info about Carmine and Rosa's parents. I was also wondering how would I go about looking up info from the Salerno Archives.
Thank you so much,
Nick

Welcome Nick.....
Your best bet might be via the library of your local Family History Center (part of the Mormon Church) where you can order microfilms which contain copies of the original documents from most Italian towns and cities:
www.familysearch.org/e...et_fhc.asp
for salerno:
www.familysearch.org/e...prePARTOF=
You can order films (kept in SLC) for a 6 week period (with renewal option) which contain Atti di Nascita (Births), Atti di Morti (Deaths) and Atti di Matrimonio for the Community you want to search. A little basic Italian is needed, but there are forms available which help you to understand what is needed from each type of document.
Please feel free to ask questions after you check out the sites above. I started my own research with very little info and Italian skills and was able to get back to the mid-1700s for both my Paternal and Maternal families, but it does take time and some detective skills.
I just spent 4 nights in Cava di Tirenni, which is about 15 minutes from the city of Salerno ---- it is a beautiful area.
Good luck.

Thanks for posting so quickly Charlie,
I really appreciate it. There doesn't seem to be much for the town of Nocera Superiore or Salerno, unfortunately. I have used the LDS microfilms before with better results, its odd that they don't have that much info regarding Salerno.
Wow, Cava di Tirenni is really close to Nocera Superiore, thats awesome!! I would love to visit there one day. How have you been doing your Italian research? I see that you are also researching Cosenza. That's really great, because part of my family comes from Cassano all Ionio in Cosenza. Hows the research for Cosenza? Do you have any tips?
Thanks so much,
Nick

Hi Nick,
If the docs are not available on Microfilm you will have to try writing to the Municipio (L'ufficio d' Anagrafe or L'Ufficio di Stato Civile) in the Comune (in Italian) asking for specific records (and dates if possible to make the searching easier).....that being said, you may get a response or you may have to write multiple times.....most of the small towns don't have big staffs and of course the operate at their own pace....I think they are required by law to respond. Hopefully they will have the original docs (there are rare cases where records were destroyed in the war or from natural disasters).
I did San Giorgio Albanese in Cosenza using FHC microfilms......now Cosenza has a portal with a lot of the docs online....the site is a bit finicky, but once you establish a free account, you should be good to go there:
88.59.143.158/ascs_web...78D4.node1
It is a long URL ----
ARCHIVIO DI STATO DI COSENZA - Portale della Storia degli Italiani
I have been very fortunate as I have been to Italy many times over the years (about 20) and I have probably seen more places in Italy than all of my Italian cousins.
I began uploading a few pictures from the area....they are waiting for Nuccia's blessing to be viewable.
Good luck with your research.

I have written to Nocera Superiore and Nocera Inferiore with no luck at all. Written multiple times and no response. I did actual letters rather than emails. This has been done over a 3 or 4 year period. The same with Pagani. Salerno province has little if any films available. Some records are online at Ancestry and come with the LDS but really very few.

Thanks so much guys.
I have writtent to Nocera Superiore as well, and am still waiting for a response. That Cosenza website is amazing Charlie, thank you so much.
How is the Municipio in Cosenza? I think Ill try to write to them.
Lilbees, have you been able to find anything from Salerno at all? I know they're supposed to be digitalizing their records, but I dont know to to get to them.
Thanks so much,
Nick

Digitalizing of records at the Archives is still a work in progress. Nothing online as yet.

There is both a Province of Cosenza as well as the city of Cosenza.....in my case I have dealt with the Municipio in the Comune of San Giorgio Albanese, so I have not had any dealings with the city of Cosenza.

I see what you mean Charlie. I hadn't thought about that. I'm actually not dealing with the city of Cosenza either, I need to deal with Cassano allo Ionio, Cosenza.
