I thought they would be also... but i always wanted to find out my grandmas real last name.. and thats what i came across Smile

Is there a chance that Rose Gilchrist gave a fake name when she gave her up for adoption? they checked the records for hudson county deaths 1954 to 2008 for Rose Gilchrist death, and nothing was found Confused

Maybe she got married, sometime later. Her death would have her married name.

I also searched hudson county, NJ the town listed on the adoption record said she lives in Harrison, but there is no rose gilchrist living in harrison in 1930

edit: there is one whom is 8 years old in 1920 living in Hoboken... Maybe that is her?

My guess is the eight year old you found is actually the 17 year old in the hospital in 1930. In 1920 she was eight.

my father says it sounds like orphanage

I don't think it would be an orphanage since the inmates were too old to be in one. This looks like it could be a place for people who required additional care for one reason or another. Until we find out what it was exactly there is no point in speculating.

Maybe this page will help?

www.jerseyhistory.org/...er%20List:

Steven, it sounds to me like Rose had trouble caring for herself and her child financially (and perhaps emotionally since she may not have had much support being what we assume is a single mom) and so she may have used this hospital to help her get back on her feet. Remember, not everything is as it seems and she may have felt her only option to have her child have a better life was to give her up for adoption..again, only speculation of course!

This is slightly off topic but I recently discovered the orphanage that my grandmother of Irish descent and her siblings were placed following the death of the mother -- St Vincent's Orphanage in Philadelphia, PA. Internet searches unearthed a phone number so I called. A very conscientious man provided me with copies of the ledger page (the only record left as other records were destroyed) which listed the children and various information including the dates they arrived and were discharged, the parent's names, contact names, if they were baptized, and what parish or church the baptism took place. Fortunately, for me St Joachim's Catholic Church is still in existence; I was able to call the church and request copies of any available records of my ancestors. Baptismal records were found and I am awaiting copies of those as well as any other records which pertain to the family. I thought I would never find the orphanage as none of my living relatives knew its name or location. The children were placed in the orphanage because the mother died about a month after giving birth to a child and the father couldn't manage the 4 children plus an infant. After six years the children were discharged to the care of their uncle, at least for a few years. There are some gaps I haven't been able to fill in yet. I know that my grandmother spoke glowingly of the Mother Superior but not so much of the other sisters who were rather cruel and cold.
