My Italian grandfather had the nick name of "Pookie". Is this an Italian term term or was it just something his kids came up with?

I guess it could be either really. He may refer to something he often said or something like that or just something his kids came up with. I have an "Uncle" who we all call "Squeek" and for the life of me, I have no idea who started that or when/why it started.

What was his first name? Is there a clue there?
