Hi Everyone..

It's nice to hear what everyone has been up to this summer. Yes, FB has become a big part of people's lives - it's true- but then again, it's a social network and has a different purpose then Gente. Personally, I enjoy playing some of the games on it and I've been able to meet up with many of my overseas relatives because of it. BUT - having said that , I don't find myself on there 24 hours a day. As a matter of fact, I have spent most of this week trying to finish uploading images to the websites. I have several years to upload which have been put on the back burner and between that, work, and painting the house, we have been so busy.

I know in the end it will be worth it though. It will leave me all winter to research which is when I find most people to be the most active. By the way Carole..is that a recent picture of you? lol lol

Like most everyone, I check in daily if possible. I have been working on my brickwalls in all part of the family with not a bunch of luck.

Mail response, as usual, is quite slow from Italy. In fact, nothing!

Well it pays to check in daily not only with Gente but also with IGF.

As luck would have it, VJ posted an infomational link regarding records for Castellammare di Stabia.

Well, as it turned out, it is images of indexes. That is okay with me. At least I can send requests for the records I found. In fact, found many missing links for my family out of Roccapiemonte. Seems they all moved up to that area married, had babies, etc. My great great grandparents also moved there. I know their death dates as well as all my great uncles. I know I can only make so many requests at a time to the Civil office but would love to send them all. I never thought I would find any of this information. What a relief. With the marriages I have new surnames which I will post later.

Forgot the most important thing that has happened recently............

I QUIT SMOKING! I AM NOW 3 WEEKS DOWN THE ROAD.

After 50+ years of smoking the smell in my home really got to me. Am in the process of washing everything, walls, curtains, draperies (dry cleaners) pillows and anything else that can absorb the smell. Will need to paint next year. It has been 5 years so that will help tremendously. I look forward to walking into my own home and having it really smell great. Right now it doesn't.

Hey.... 'Well done you'!

That is a terrific achievement. I know 'cos I did it too. My last ciggie was on the 31st March 2004... that was the night I had my heart attack and after 10 days in the 're-animation ward' and then another 10 weeks in hospital I actually never began again!

Buty don't get me wrong - I do still, on occasion, fancy smoking "just the one" - but I'm afraid that I might return to my '3 packs a day' habit.
I don't mind when people smoke around me and often (jokingly) tell 'em to 'blow a bit of smoke my way'. Well it's a cheap fix for me - they paid for the cigarette. And that's another point- I've not had so much disposable income since I began smoking in the mid 50's.... I actually have some money left over at the end of each month now - and not the other way around.

At least there are no more of these around the house any more and that's a blessing!

Congrats lilbees!

That's fantastic! I know there have been a few people here that have quit over the last few years so BRAVO! Hopefully I can get there too one day. I am also painting my house (same reason - the smell of smoke in here was killing me) and so now comes the hard part..

Oh Heck! Couldn't walk into my closet without wanting to gag. I wasn't clear, had you quite and are painting or you are still smoking and painting.

You know what, you can paint mine while you are at it.

I know we don't advertise but try Chantex.

Well we're kinda in the middle of both right now. Still smoking (outside though unless its in the middle of the night and I am on my PC doing something) and we've cut down. The doctor is giving me something next month. She wants to make sure all my tests come back ok after my physical to make sure.

As for painting..My hubby is doing it! Wink

To be very honest, what the doctor gave me is really great and I feel quite good. It really has helped.

My difficult part is when I am working on the computer like you. I was so used to lighting up, putting it in the ashtray and then later find it had burned out so relight a new one. I definitely used more cigerettes then than during nice weather and working in the garden or sitting on the patio.

Nice to hear everyone if getting along OK. Well Done! Libees.

Carole you mentioned 'FaceBook' I must admit some of my friends have invited me to join but something stops me I have never been onto that site.
It is sad in a way when something else seems to take over Big Style but I feel Gente will keep going. Even if we just pop in to say Hello to each other.

Carole I loved your 'picture' jsut looked kinda like me Very Happy Very Happy
But I found this great mirror so I thought you would maybe like to borrow it for a wee while. No exercise rquired to get results!!

Hi Carole...

Nice to get your reply - it's been busy - the librarians wonder where I dig up the books I take out. Usually no one has checked them out for years but this is also a way to make sure they don't toss them.

One book was published in 1900: The rulers of the South; Sicily, Calabria, Malta, by Francis Marion Crawford with 100 original drawings - many of these places are no longer there. He was an American but born at Bagni di Lucca in 1854.

Haven't found much yet on the Syrian side, but it is very interesting. The census records list them as Turkish/Syrian, which riles John, but that is because it was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time. I get the same response from Poles about being listed as Austrian/Polish. Did find some Syrian genealogy sites and will post there.

John also said that his family came over with some other local people and I found the same name in my high school yearbook: a descendant but what was that last name originally: Salem LaHood. Hmmm.

Back to the books...cats already checked on.

I dont use facebook. I havent been around much because I havent been doing much genealogy lately..unless you want to count, the cleaning of my genealogy file cabinet, which had papers in there since 1992. So much was garbage. Notes, old letters, most of which, is obsolete, since I long ago, found all of those people.

I thought, if I emptied the thing out..ditched what I didnt want, I would have a lot more room in there. Heh. The thing was so crammed with papers, that now, I dont really have any more room than I did before. Well, now I can get my hand in between things, tho.

The bottom drawer, contains books, maps and half of it contains a few folders, bulging with cards and pix made by my grandchildren. So cute..all of those I love you grandma things. Did I mention I have 13 grandchildren and I wont throw out anything they have made for me? Next to go..the books..lol I want the maps.

NOOOOO! Don't throw out the books! Books are..sacred! I have been trying to clean out all my old papers and files as well so I can totally relate to what you are saying. I have so much junk in the 5 years that I have been doing this so I can only imagine what you are going throu. The good thing is that once I am done, I will be able to streamline everything down. It looks so much better already and I feel so much better when I sit at my desk and start something now. I still have a long way to go and only a limited amount of time each day to do it but I'll get there!

I thought it would take forever to clean this thing out..but, it didnt even take an hour. I had everything in different folders, so I didnt have to look at much of the contents. I also had 4 folders for the 4 main branches. Anything I saved from the other folders, went into one of those.

LOL I wouldnt throw out the books. I would just move them someplace else..out of that drawer. I have one drawer in my desk that needs to be looked at...but, thats a 10 minute job. I seem to use it as a catch all.
