A member on another site, who lives in Italy, went to the archives for Reggio Clabria to look up my family for me. He was told RC records date from 1809-1865 only & from 1865-1920 they are kept in Palmi. Anyone heard that before, or know why they did that?

I need three death records from The Reggio Archive (to discover parents) as the individual towns I need are not available for that period. It is VERY difficult to find a researcher willing to help me in this area. The archives seem to be my only option. Let us know if you find anything. I have three dead ends that have been eating at me for a long time.

James: The rest of the answer I got from him said "Italy is a wonderful country & Italians are wonderful people if you ask no questions beginning with "WHY". Being a foreigner I asked the big question, & they looked at me like I came from Mars & started explaining why it was the most normal thing in the world that the volumes from 1809-1865 are from RC & those from from 1865-1920 are in Palmi, but that I didnt listen very well." I have sent for my grandparents birth & marriage certificates in Cittanova RC & am hoping for the best. I really wish I could help you also, but I think im in the same boat as you. Johnnie P.S. My mistake, when he said he was going to the archives I thought he lived in Italy, sorry

John and Jim -

One thing I've learned since I started researching my family is that each town kept it's own set of records and also a second set of records that were sent to their state archive. Here is a list that you both might find useful and you'll see that there are two locations in RC for records....Palmi and Locri

The possible reason for the records not being there could be because of an earthquake in 1909 I've included the link. When the page comes up click on the box that says view full article.

Hope this helps.

Johnnie,
Yes, I have also heard of the records being split up like this. The records from Gerace after a certain date are held in Locri, and the ones for Cittanova are held in Palmi. I first noticed this years ago when going through my microfilms and the cover page said "District of Palmi" or "District of Unico" or "District of Gerace". I have concluded that they records of a few comuni were held by district - how accurate this is I am not sure.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that you will receive word about your grandparents soon! Wink
