#1: New member originally from Chicago, ancestors from Potenza Author: CrapulloLocation: Northern California PostPosted: Fri Feb 25, 2011 12:42 pm
    ----
Hello, my cousins and I have been editing a family history and have discovered our Italian ancestors were not from "the toe of the boot" as we thought but are from Laurenzana in Potenza, Basilicata. So we are very excited and are revising our thinking about our origins. We found my grand father's birth certificate which clearly showed his parents as being from Laurenzana, then I quickly found their marriage information as, indeed, Laurenzana, Potenza, not Calabria!

The last edition of the family history was made in the mid-1970s; it is so much easier now with the internet. I enjoyed claiming the username, Crapullo, as the name has been revised out of my U.S.A. family tree. Looking forward to reading posts on this forum. I already sent an email to add the surname to the database. Thank you,

Crapullo

Welcome! We're happy to have you here and hope we can help you with your research. It's always exciting to find new information on your family. And I love your choice of username. I was wondering where that came from. What was the original surname? (If there was one)

Hi Nuccia,

This is the information I got excited about:

Name: Marone, Rosa Carmela
Spouse: Egidiantonio Crapullo
Location: ITALY
Region: Laurenzana, Potenza, Basilicata

We believe that was about 1870.

Not sure but Crapullo seems uncommon. Doesn't come up at all now on searches on current Italian sites but does show up in the U.S., only in New York State. Family legend is that the name changed when the kids went to school in the 1880s. That name still has Cr*p in it and some people over the generations have changed it. That variation will probably be gone also in a few years.

Maybe the 1870 Crapullo spelling was a variation itself; so many things to wonder about!

Thank you, I've already found links to useful tidbits; I'm learning a lot.

Crapullo

I believe the original surname may have been Crapella
Here is is on GensItalia and you can find it on Steve Morse's Search Engine.

Not sure if this helps but it's a possibility.

The LDS has microfilmed Laurenzana so it may be worth it to order a film and see what you can find. While the marriages seem to stope about 1865, there are births which occur after that. You may find one of the couple's children in those films. Here's the info:

authors: Laurenzana (Potenza). Ufficio dello stato civile, (Main Author)
format: Manuscript/On Film
language: Italian
publications: Salt Lake City, Utah : Filmati dalla Genealogical Society of Utah, 1995-1997
physical: in 25 bobine di microfilm, 16 mm.
Notes

Microfilm dei registri originali nel Tribunale di Potenza, e nell'Archivio di Stato, Potenza.

Usung STeve Morse and Gens Italia it looks like it was the Marone name that may have been from Potenza. Perhaps Crapella may have started out in Catanzaro and he married in a Marone from Potenza so he moved there. Carpella points to Nucastro CZ - Can you post a copy of the marriage act here to see if there are any clues on it?

Example I found:

First Name: Carmela
Last Name: Marone
Ethnicity: Italian
Last Place of Residence: Laurenzana
Date of Arrival: Dec 29, 1892
Age at Arrival: 25y Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: EMS
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0065

A belated thank you, Nuccia. I have dreamed of looking into this. My computer is in the shop so I'll get to it later.

Family legend has Rosa Marone Crapullo walking with her young son to Naples circa 1876. The boy died (of fever?) on shipboard and was buried on Capri. I'd love to find his birth record. Her husband arrived in Chicago about 1873.

The name is another trail to follow in Italy. Very exciting. Thanks.
