Evening, Nice to come upon a new site that may help shed light on my paternal family. Briefly, my paternal grandfather emigrated at a young age - 12-16, allegedly making the journey alone from Genoa via Liverpool between 1860 and 1870 and arriving in Boston or New York. Unfortunately, the name "Polando" is not be be found anywhere in Italy (I have searched for 35 years) though I did come upon the name D'olando in Corsica, at one time part of the Genovese Republic. The only early ship manifest naming my grandfather is from 1908 when he returned to Genoa with my uncle and aunt to "find family." His wife, my paternal grandmother, Maria Arata, also of Italian lineage, came to the US in the late nineteenth century. I have done a search of the name in the pagine bianchi and found quite a few listed but am not sure how to continue. She grew up in Boston's Northend. So, I am looking for advice on how to proceed. Ringrazio in anticipo, David |
