Having enjoyed all the letters, and even the tears, I find it sad that we may not know more of the life of Tano and family. I hope some way that we are updated from time to time. We at Gente are all part of sharing that families happiness and miseries. It makes me think of the hardships of my family both in Italy and especially in Tunisia.

A few letters yet remain to be translated. It was in these concluding letters that I thought there might be clues to discovering surviving family members; the serendipity resulting from Luca's intervention was truly unexpected. Part of my rationale for beginning this adventure in genealogy was to provide a story for me and any in my family who were interested. As it was, the history I faced was abrupt at best, and fragmented in stories and memories which are rapidly disappearing or to which there is no longer access. I cannot promise that I will write a cogent story from all of this, although, by now you may well have reckoned my fascination does indeed lie with the written word Wink

Carole,
I will set about doing something in the album section when I have gotten what photos I can locate scanned, etc.

Oh Alessandra what can I say? I am honoured to be allowed do this... I will do the latest letter this evening.

THANK YOU - THANK YOU - THANK YOU
Or as Tano would have said.... 'I kiss your hand!'

Meanwhile, I will have to begin to learn Italian... Very Happy Very Happy Bravissimo!

Ho solo aggiunto quel che avevi lasciato in sospeso. Il resto mi sembra ok.
Ciao

Dearest Carole, unfortunately I don't have as much time as I would like to be able to dedicate to this pleasant surprise...
I have quickly translated the 4 pages of grandad Tano into Italian, but to translate into English I would need a whole day...because I'm a little out of practice!!!
However I see that you are good at this and together with Luca you have done a stupendous job...therefore I wont steal the job and I will limit myself to writing my comments, while the more difficult work like the translation I will leave to you.
Believe me it's not that I'm not sufficiently interested, it's that I have little free space and my poor English needs a lot more.
In the meantime I hope to have done things right in writing in Italaian...
I embrace you and I thank you
Or better still, I embrace and thank you all, for your availability and for your affection.

My dearest brother, it is a long time that I have not had your news and I don't know why (in fact) I am suffering for you and your family.
I would like to know why you haven't written to me any more and I hope that when you receive this letter of mine you are all well in the family, as I am well and today I can tell you that my bride and all my dear children (are also well).
My dearest brother, I have nothing to tell you, that which remains is to kiss you dearly,

Page 2
to you and your bride and a thousand strog embraces and kisses to your dear children, meanwhile we salute your mother-in-law and all the family. Many good wishes from your sister-in law Carmela and her husband, we kiss the hands of your in-laws and we...............recieved. Many wishes and kisses from our sisters, from their husbands and their children and they kiss your hands.
From me a strong kiss and also to your...

...bride. And bekieve me it's me, your affectionate brother Tano Dragotta that thinks of you always.
Goodbye, Goodbye, good news and write to me immediately

Continue to remember your brother who thinks of you always (that is: remember that your brother Tano thinks always of you).

My dear sister-in law, a thought and a wish....... and bride. We are all (keeping) well, I hope that you are all well too when you receive this letter of mine. I salute you and I kiss you (that is the sister-in-law) and my brother together with your children, both I and my wife and my children, and believe me, I am your dear brother-in-law Tano

To the hands of my brother Ignazio Dragotta, I am, your brother Tano

I can't make out the date of this short letter so I'm not sure where exactly it fits in the sequence. While it is written by Tano, his handwriting seems to indicate a change of some sort.

(The date seems to be 1946 April 27th, in favor of this interpretation are Tano's words:" after many years we didn't write each other... )

Luca,
This letter was the last one written chronologically; however, there are two more letters dated in 1945 which have not yet been translated. If you prefer, I will upload those first and come back to this letter later.

Pag. 1
Belmonte Mezzagno li 27 Aprile 1946.
Mia cara cognata e fratello.

Dragotto. Questo biglietto lo date a Giuseppa.

Ciao
Luca
