Using/buying Italian SIM (data) when traveling in Italy

I'm heading back to Italy this fall and I would like to buy a SIM card after arriving in Italy for use in my GSM cellular phone for Internet Access (so I need DATA). I have read a great deal about this online and I'm not sure how much success that people have really had....just wanted to learn if anyone on Gente has done this and what brand they used & where they have purchased the SIM. My carrier is T-Mobile who has coverage in Italy (but it is very expensive as I have used them in the past for for phone calls there and other countries).

I considered getting a sim card when we spent 16 days in Sicily in Nov of 2014 but opted to rely on WIFI instead. WIFI worked well for us as we were staying in hotels which provided free WIFI.

Thanks Tom, I'm pretty I will have WIFI in at least 2 hotels, not sure about the third as this is a collection of apartments in very old restored buildings in the Old Center of Corato, so the signal might be a problem there. I was also interested in having it for looking up info and using some travel apps I have downloaded to my phone. Too pricey with my US Carrier while overseas.
